- Do antisocial traits influence discriminatory behaviors against sexual minorities? – A systematic reviewPublication . Afonso, Catarina de Almeida; Basto-Pereira, MiguelDiscrimination against sexual minorities has mainly been studied as a consequence of situational or circumstantial factors. However, few authors have highlighted the relevance of studying personality traits leading to this type of discrimination. In particular, antisocial traits, which capture the socially undesirable traits of antisocial behavior, may influence the display of discriminatory behaviors against the LGBTQ+ community. Following the PRISMA guidelines, a systematic review studying the relation between antisocial traits and their influence on discriminatory behavior against sexual minorities was conducted. EBSCOhost, Web of Science, PubMed, and Scopus were searched by two independent reviewers from their start until December 2024. Quantitative studies, measuring the relationship between antisocial traits and discriminatory behavior against the LGBTQ+ community were included. Studies with samples composed of individuals younger than 17 years old were excluded. Six articles were considered eligible for inclusion, and six predictors were evaluated. Psychopathy and Low levels of Agreeableness showed consistent significant relations to discriminatory behavior against sexual minorities. Machiavellianism and narcissism were consistent in all but one facet. Conscientiousness showed inconsistent findings, and sadism obtained no significant results. Major differences were found only in Conscientiousness across all studies considered. This work suggests that Dark Tetrad traits, as well as Low levels of Agreeableness, are positively related to higher levels of discriminatory behaviors against sexual minorities. Futures research should focus on attending to the limitations found, as well as recruiting more heterogeneous samples.
