Abstract(s)
O autor aborda a problemática da depressão nos
idosos, a sua prevalência, a etiologia e eventual existência
de mudanças na depressão associadas ao processo
de envelhecimento. Refere-se a importância relativa
da sintomatologia psicológica elou física da depressão.
Apresenta-se um estudo exploratório, utilizando a
Escala Geriátrica de Depressão (GDS), sobre os níveis
de depressão dos idosos residentes em lares (57) e idosos
residentes na comunidade (73), não se tendo verificado
diferenças significativas entre os dois grupos. Os
resultados são discutidos em função do quadro teórico
apresentado.
ABSTRACT: The author discusses the problem of depression in old age: its prevalence, origin and qualitative changes associated with the process of growing old, namely the relative importance of physical and psychological symptoms in depressed aged. One hundred thirty older adults divided in two groups, one living in sheltered care houses (57) and the other living in the community (73), were administered the GDS (Geriatric Depression Scale). We did not find significative differences between groups. Results are discussed according theories presented in this paper.
