Abstract(s)
Este artigo apresenta-se dividido em 4 secções
principais: na primeira, as questões do bem-estar psicológico
e das manifestações comportamentais problemáticas
dos animais em cativeiro são abordadas no
sentido de clarificar o tema e operacionalizar conceitos
tratados ao longo do texto; na segunda, enumeram-se
alguns critérios que permitem avaliar a situação dos
animais em termos de bem-estar; na terceira apresentam-
se exemplos de estratégias terapêuticas
desenvolvidas por alguns investigadores e destinadas
especialmente a chimpanzés, mas abrangendo outros
primatas; na quarta secção expõe-se um estudo de caso
- as alterações recentes na vida dos chimpanzés do
Jardim Zoológico de Lisboa e o resumo dum trabalho
realizado pela autora com os objectivos de permitir o
desenvolvimento de novos comportamentos e reduzir
alguns aspectos comportamentais indesejáveis; os
resultados desse estudo são discutidos em termos das
medidas a tomar para uma gestão dos cativeiros não só
de chimpanzés, como de outros animais, que respeite
as suas necessidades e promova assim um maior bem estar
psicológico.
ABSTRACT: This paper is divided into 4 main sections: in the first we approach the question of psychological wellbeing and the problematic behavioral performances of captive animals, in order to claryfy the issue and operationalize concepts that will appear throughout the text; in the second, some criteria to evaluate the situation of captive animals in terms of their welfare, are numbered; in the third,examples of therapeutic strategies developed by a number of researchers, aiming especially chimpanzees, but also other primates, are presented; in the fourth section, we introduce a case study - the recent changes in the lives of chimpanzees at Lisboa Zoological Garden and the brief account of a project conducted by the guthor with the purpose of promoting the development of new behaviors and reducing undesirable behavioral performances; the results of that study are discussed in view of the measures to take for a management of chimpanzee’s captive environments, as well as those of other animals, that respects their needs, thus prommoting an enhancement in their psychological wellbeing.
