- Adaptation and validation of the neosexism scale to the relational context: exploration of endorsement and psychological distress within couplesPublication . Moital, Hanna Patricia Matejka; Miranda, Mariana Pires deSexism is a complex topic that is still firmly established across different societies. This paper focuses on neosexism, a specific form of contemporary sexism. Across two studies, we addressed the lack of investigation about neosexism in affective relationships, by adapting and validating the Portuguese translation of the Neosexism Scale to a relational context (NS-R). In Study 1, we adapted the items of the scale and presented a preliminary version to an expert panel (n = 5), that evaluated the content validity of the NS-R. Study 2 followed two main objectives. First, we assessed the factorial validity and reliability of the NS-R (n = 168), revealing a good fit for a one-dimensional factor-structure, moderate internal consistency, and a sensibility regarding gender. In the second part of Study 2 (n = 68), we selected participants who had answered in dyads. With these 34 different-gendered couples, we explored the functioning of relational neosexism ratings within couples and the link between the relational neosexism of the male partners and the psychological distress symptoms of the female partners. Inter-rater agreements between women’s and men’s relational neosexist beliefs within couples revealed marginally significant results, though neosexism did not translate into variations in mental health indicators. These studies provide evidence for the validity and reliability of the NS-R, presenting a gender sensitive instrument to measure neosexist in the relational context, and offering an insight into the complex functioning of relational neosexist beliefs within couples.
