Existem diferentes áreas do saber a pensá-lo, como por exemplo, a Filosofia e as Neurociências. Na Psicologia, o self e a identidade são noções centrais. Estamos num tempo em que coexistem diferentes e variadas visões de self e/ ou identidade na teoria e prática psicológica. Existe hoje uma falta de consenso sobre o seu significado. (1) Afinal, a que nos referimos nós, psicólogos, quando falamos de self? A proposta é escutarmos o filósofo Paul Ricoeur (1913-2005) através da obra “O Si-Mesmo como um Outro” (1991) e a sua noção de Identidade Narrativa. Encontrada a pertinência do seu pensamento para a Psicologia pretendeu-se não descorar a actual discussão, no campo da Fenomenologia, com a proposta de um self pré-reflexivo/experiencial/minimal (Dan Zahavi e Shaun Gallagher); bem como no campo das Neurociências, cingida à visão de António Damásio, com a ideia de um self nuclear vs autobiográfico. (2) Poderá haver um diálogo entre os autores? Conclui-se um entendimento possível de os convergir entre as suas afinidades, não perdendo de vista os opostos, nem o campo da Psicologia onde nos situamos.ABSTRACT: The concept of self is multifaceted and debatable. There are different areas of knowledge to think about, such as Philosophy and Neuroscience. In psychology, self and identity are central notions. We are at a time when different and varied views of self and / or identity coexist in psychological theory and practice. There is a lack of consensus on its meaning today. (1) After all, what do we refer, as psychologists, when we speak of self? The proposal is to listen to the philosopher Paul Ricoeur (1913-2005) through his work "The Self as an Other" (1991) and his notion of Narrative Identity. The pertinence of his thought to Psychology was intended not to detract from the current discussion, in the field of Phenomenology, with the proposal of a pre-reflective / experiential / minimal self (Dan Zahavi and Shaun Gallagher); as well as in the field of Neuroscience, bound to Antonio Damásio's vision, with the idea of a nuclear vs. autobiographical self. (2) Can there be a dialogue between authors?
