Para tal, contou-se com a participação de 55 atletas de competição do sexo masculino e 16 do sexo feminino, com idades compreendidas entre os 18 e 71 anos. De modo a avaliar as variáveis em estudo, foram utilizados como instrumentos o Arnett Inventory of Sensation Seeking (AISS) (Arnett, 1994), a versão reduzida do Big Five Inventory (BFI-10) (Bártolo-Ribeiro, 2017), algumas questões do Literacy in Musculoskeletal Problems (LiMP) adaptado para o contexto desportivo (Timpka et al., 2023), sendo também criados cenários hipotéticos de gravidade da lesão. Os resultados obtidos revelam um efeito significativamente negativo entre a gravidade da lesão e a intenção de competir, evidenciando também a inexistência de uma associação significativa entre a sensation seeking e a intenção de competir. Relativamente ao teste de moderação proposto, apesar de o efeito moderador da sensation seeking na relação entre a gravidade da lesão e a intenção de competir não ser significativo, observou-se um padrão que evidencia que em situações ambíguas de lesão (lesão moderada), atletas com níveis elevados deste traço de personalidade apresentam uma maior intenção de competir. Análises adicionais permitiram também observar uma associação significativa entre a sensation seeking e a dimensão Extroversão do BFI-10 e padrões que sugerem um possível papel moderador de outras variáveis em estudo. Estes resultados denotam a importância da compreensão dos traços de personalidade dos atletas em fases de recuperação de lesão e a necessidade se incluir o papel do psicólogo no delineamento das intervenções de reabilitação, com o intuito de se aumentar o nível de adesão dos atletas à mesma.ABSTRACT: The aim of this study was to analyse the effect of injury severity on the athlete's intention to compete while injured and the moderating effect of sensation seeking on this correlation. To this end, 55 male and 16 female competitive athletes aged between 18 and 71 took part in this study. In order to assess the variables under study, the Arnett Inventory of Sensation Seeking (AISS) (Arnett, 1994), the reduced version of the Big Five Inventory (BFI-10) (BártoloRibeiro, 2017), some questions from the Literacy in Musculoskeletal Problems (LiMP) adapted for the sports context (Timpka et al., 2023) were used as instruments, and hypothetical scenarios of injury severity were also created. The results show a significantly negative effect between the severity of the injury and the intention to compete, as well as no significant association between sensation seeking and the intention to compete. Regarding the proposed moderation test, although the moderating effect of sensation seeking on the relationship between injury severity and intention to compete was not significant, a pattern was observed which shows that in ambiguous injury situations (moderate injury), athletes with high levels of this personality trait show a greater intention to compete. Additional analyses also revealed a significant association between sensation seeking and the Extroversion dimension of the BFI-10 and patterns that suggest a possible moderating role for other variables under study.
