ABSTRACT: Aim: The purpose of this study is to add more information to existential psychotherapy research, regarding the exploration and identification of the ingredients that foster change during the therapeutic process, according to the client. Method: Four participants were selected to take part in forty eight weekly sessions of existential psychotherapy, for the duration of one year. Data was collected using the Client Change Interview protocol and analysed with a qualitative measure, the phenomenological method of Giorgi. The characteristics of a single participant were studied extensively and used to define which components are common to all clients. Results: Several ingredients that promote change were found, pertaining to the effect of the therapist’s interventions, the therapeutic process, the therapeutic setting/relation and the perception that the clients have of the therapist. The client’s faith in therapy was considered to be an essential part of the process of change. The four participants registered other components, such as the ability to reflect and question themselves, new perceptions of the self and of the world, better control and understanding of themselves and the ability to manage their internal resources. Conclusions: Investigation of the change process from the client’s perspective is an area that has barely been explored within existential psychotherapy research. This study is an important contribution in terms of supporting previous research, increasing data in existing literature and articulating existential theory with clinical practice.
