Abstract(s)
Problema.
Problem. The literature points to an association between parental emotion socialization and psychopathology. However, the mediating variables of this relationship are not known, and it is essential to identify them for a more effective therapeutic intervention. Objective. Emotional schemas are a promising variable in this relationship and, as such, this study seeks to analyze their role in the relationship between parental emotion socialization, during the first eighteen years of life, and psychopathology, in adulthood. Method. The three variables: parental emotion socialization, emotional schemas and psychopathology were evaluated in 246 individuals, and two mediation models were estimated, one for each parental figure, through structural equation modeling. Results. A valid model was obtained for mother in which negative evaluation of emotion is a total mediator of the relationship between invalidating emotional socialization and psychopathology, and reappraisal is a total mediator of the relationship between validating emotional socialization and psychopathology. In the father's model there was a partial mediation of negative evaluation of emotion in the relationship between invalidating emotional socialization and psychopathology. Additionally, a total mediation was found for both negative evaluation and reappraisal in the relationship between validating emotional socialization and psychopathology. Conclusion. The results highlight the importance of emotional schemas in understanding the influence of parental emotion socialization in psychopathology, referring to the usefulness of focusing attention on emotional schemas, especially on negative evaluation, in psychotherapy.
