Abstract(s)
ABSTRACT: The person with a disability arising from a total laryngectomy suffers adverse consequences on a whole, particularly in what concerns the psychosocial dimension, compromising their adjustment in this area. Scientific literature identifies a connection between received social support and the stigma perceived by laryngectomized patients as relevant to their quality of life. This link has not yet been explored in the Portuguese context. Given the significant connection between these variables, it becomes relevant to further investigate the degree of interinfluence between them, as well as to study the experience of the psychological impact of disability due to laryngectomy. A model was built using the technique of therapeutic auto photography as a facilitator of testimonies. It was found that perceived social support has a positive impact on perceived quality of life, while perceived stigma has a negative impact on perceived quality of life. It was possible to identify risk factors and promoters of perceived quality of life, as well as facilitators and barriers in the process of adapting to the reality of laryngectomy. Some of the results support the existing evidence on psychosocial adaptation to total laryngectomy and highlight areas for future research and clinical practice. We highlight the need to develop research into the experience of patients with total laryngectomy, namely by investigating their post-traumatic growth.
